The dry load vessel ms. Hendrika has, for decades, fulfilled a pioneering role in the field of sustainable operations within inland waterway transport as a whole and in our cooperative. In an interview with Schuttevaer, owner/master Martin Seine shares his vision of sustainable investments and the important steps that the sector has already taken.
According to Martin, the inland waterway transport industry has achieved an estimated CO2 reduction of 50% since 1990, not least with more efficient vessel handling, innovative hull design and optimisation of motors. However, he emphasises the fact that there are even more opportunities for business owners in the sector. Monitoring and smart investment are essential in this respect if increased environmental benefits are to be achieved.
Martin calls on his fellow shipowners to keep making sustainable choices, as everything that is beneficial to the environment also represents an advantage for business owners. The narrative he relates is an inspiring example of how enterprise and sustainability can go hand in hand.
